Firework Accident Leaves Police Chief Severely Injured

August 15, 2017

An accident involving fireworks has changed the life of one police chief completely. The accident occurred when one of the fireworks misfired and hit the police chief in his arm. This accident almost took his life, and removed half of his arm. As a result, the victim almost bled out.

His quick thinking may have saved his own life as he yelled for witnesses to put a tourniquet on his arm as he knew that his arm was missing. Getting a belt from another man at the scene, one of the volunteer firefighters who is also a nurse used the belt to create the tourniquet around the victim’s left bicep. He was then flown by helicopter to the nearest hospital that had a Level 1 Trauma center where doctors continued to work to save his life. An outpouring of support has come from the community for the fast recovery of the police chief.

An investigation is ongoing on what happened to make the firework misfire. The police chief is certified and licensed to manage fireworks, and he believes it was a defective product. He hopes to continue in his role of police chief and has been released from the hospital to heal at home.

This accident could have very easily become a tragedy if not for the quick thinking of those involved. If you or a loved one has been injured due to a defective product or someone’s negligence, you may be able to file a personal injury claim against them. Life can be challenging after an injury, and the bills can pile up. This is one way to protect yourself. Contact the law office of Mark A. Smith to discuss the details of your case.
