A sex offender may live closer than you think as residents of Cocoa, Fla., found out recently. At least 17 registered sex offenders listed a nearby Walmart as their place of residence on the offender home address list. Some on the same list were even sexual predators.
How can a place where children frequent be the address of a registered sex offender? The state allows homeless sex offenders to list the closest physical address as their home residence. For the more than 17 on the list in Cocoa, they are most likely from a homeless camp that is located across the street from the local Walmart – a store where families with children shop frequently.
When shoppers at Walmart were confronted with the information, they were outraged that a sex offender was living in proximity to the store. Walmart wasn’t pleased with the sex offenders using their store address, either.
When Walmart was asked about the sex offenders using the address of the Clearlake Road store, it was unaware that this was occurring. In a statement, the company said, “We work to maintain a safe environment for our customers and associates. It’s disturbing to learn that convicted felons would list our store as their residential address. We condemn such a practice and must refer any questions to local law enforcement.”
